Makris Group executive team

The Makris Group Board comprises of six board members, one of which is the chairman, two of the members are independent.

The members bring valuable experience and skills, including industry and business knowledge, financial management and corporate governance.

Con Makris

Executive Chairman

From humble beginnings in Greece, Constantine “Con” Makris migrated to Australia in the 1960s, parlaying his strong work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit into establishing an impressive retail portfolio that would be the genesis of the Makris Group.

Known for his energy, commitment and passion for retail property, Con grew his portfolio from a fish and chips shop to include a chain of chicken shops and several supermarkets.

In the early 1980s, Con sold his chain of chicken shops and acquired his first shopping centre in Adelaide.

Con’s ability to identify properties and accurately read an area and its demographics underpinned the swift growth of his business.

He purchased properties with good existing cash flow, but with re-development opportunities.

Makris Group evolved to become South Australia’s largest privately owned property group, with an internal management team led by CEO Christopher Harding. The Group includes shopping centres in South Australia, Victoria and Queensland.

Through continued expansion, the company has become a major player in the Australian retail property market, driven by a strategy of geographical diversification with a focus on lifestyle destination properties.

Christos Philippou

Group Financial Controller

Though hailing from Greek Cypriot origins, Chris grew up in South Africa where he spent his schooling years achieving academic excellence.

From a prefect in primary school to taking out the top spot in the Computer Science Olympiad at Benoni High School and placing within the top 100 candidates in South Africa, Chris quickly refined a skillset that would see him graduating from the University of Pretoria with honours and taking the financial world by storm.

Starting his career as a trainee at one of Johannesburg’s leading audit, tax and advisory service provider KPMG Inc in 2007, Chris’s strong work ethic and tenacity saw him work his way up the corporate ladder to a managerial position just three years on.

As manager, Chris was involved in statutory audits across KPMG’s Consumer Markets and Technology division as well as oversaw the financial management of major clients including Henley Business School, Nestle and Super Group Limited.

With a wealth of experience behind him, Chris accepted a position in 2013 at Tubular Holdings – a group of companies that represent one of South Africa’s leading privately owned construction companies – as the Senior Group Financial Manager.

When his Group Financial Director resigned in 2015, Chris took over the role of Group CFO and became responsible for the company’s finance and reporting function as well as day-to-day operations of the finance department, including the Group’s cash flow, structure and strategy.

Being both a Registered Auditor and Chartered Accountant, Chris continued to grow in his field by undertaking various Continuous Professional Development (CPD) courses including the IFRS, technical and taxations update courses as well as SAICA Assessor training.

In December 2017, Chris seized the opportunity to leave Bedfordview in South Africa and immigrate to Australia on a Skilled Independent visa, residing in Brisbane.

It was this decision that has lead Chris to joining the Makris Group as Group Financial Controller.

With a life outside of work heavily focused on travel, motorsport, traditional Greek culture and fine dining, Chris’s well-balanced nature and love for the industry make him a valued asset to the Makris Group.
